Use a 2-inch barrel iron from Conair. You can get it from Target or some drugstores for not more than $25. It works really well without damaging your hair. The heat is adjustable and holds all day if you don't get your hair wet. You don't need to use any special gel with it, just curl and go!

I have thick, heavy hair and with a little mousse and hairspray the cheapo, Revlon 1-inch curling iron($10 at Target) works awesome. I've had it for over a year and it still works! I actually curled my hair with it today and it is still wavy.

Put big pieces of hair in the large size hot rollers, you don't have to be neat about it, remove them when nearly cool for softer waves, let cool for tighter curl/wave, finger through it....voila.....Its quick and easier than using an iron

i have "asian hair" which never ever holds cuz its so thick and coarse but so far the best thing for me is actually a straightener that works as a curling iron too. its the chi straightener that can be found at beauty supply stores and even target. it works the same way but is SUPER hot. so be careful wen you use it. it is on the pricy side but its worth the buy. but if not then the way to go is heat control. the hotter it goes the more it will stay. also think about oils and other products that will enhance ur hair's curls. i use biosilk oil before i curl my hair. leaves it soft and smells good too! and last, i have to apply hairspray after each section of hair i do just in case it falls out. hope this helps!
